My dear friends,
By now you’d have noticed that all the four issues of INI in a year reach you on an important day – a day when we celebrate something. This issue, dated July–Sept ’26, comes to you on 15 August – the day when we celebrate our Blessed Mother’s Assumption and the political freedom we won from the British, our colonial masters, who ruled and looted our country for nearly 190 years.
This issue carries two interesting interviews – one with Fr Errol Fernandes, SJ (BOM), whose blog won 10 million views recently, and the other with Fr Stephen Sinn, SJ, the Australian Jesuit who has spent his life for and with people on the periphery.
In view of the International Day of Democracy, observed on 15 September, we have an article on democracy, written by Jerald D’Souza, SJ. Thanks to Jivan, we have Fr Emmanuel Arockiam’s article on the need for laughter, fun, and joy in religious life.
A uniquely interesting feature in this issue of INI is the sharing of 13 MDU Scholastics on what they have learned from their summer camps, spent with a variety of groups on the margins – like the homeless, children of migrants, trans people, and workers in salt pans. You have also Joe Durai’s short story. Interestingly, what draws the young man in the story to religious life is the work of Jesuits with another group of the marginalized – refugees.
